I think I heard this thing recently a little while ago about Maslow’s hierarchy having to be changed and having to add the internet in at the top of the list. This unreliability was a hot topic in our community WhatsApp group, often filled with messages asking, “Is anyone else’s Virgin down?” rather than neighbourhood watch updates. Secondly, the speed issue. While BT’s service was generally stable, the speed fluctuations during peak times were a major letdown. The promise of consistent high-speed internet fell apart during busy hours, impacting even basic tasks like Microsoft Teams or Google Meets calls. I opted for the full Fibre 900 package, but the speeds were nowhere near a gigabit, averaging around 200-300 Mbps, and dropping to 100-200 Mbps during peak times. This was far from the one-to-one contention ratio I expected, feeling more like a million-to-one, or perhaps the whole of London-to-one.

Lastly, the pricing structure with BT is disappointing. For the 900 service, the price is around £45 a month during the contract period. However, post-contract, the cost skyrockets to an exorbitant cost of £75 a month. It’s disheartening to see long-term customers penalized with higher rates, while new customers enjoy better deals. This lack of appreciation for the cost and customer loyalty is baffling.

Furthermore, the quality of the BT router left much to be desired. Despite the lofty promises in their adverts, the performance was subpar. It was not as effective as my Ubiquiti Mesh WiFi Alien system, which, in this case, justified its cost.

In summary, while BT Fibre may seem okay, it’s not great, especially considering the low bandwidth for the price. The combination of subpar speeds, a confusing installation process, and a disappointing pricing model led to my decision to switch. An interesting point about these two providers is their availability; often where Hyperoptic is available, Community Fibre isn’t, and vice versa. Hyperoptic typically targets high-density residential buildings, making them an ideal option in such environments. From the feedback I’ve gathered from friends and colleagues who use Hyperoptic, they are quite satisfied with its performance – it’s both reliable and fast, akin to Community Fibre in areas where the latter isn’t available.

If I had the choice and Hyperoptic were available in my location, it would definitely be a contender. However, I reside in a street with houses rather than a high-rise, where Hyperoptic coverage usually isn’t present. Therefore, if you’re in an area without access to Community Fibre but Hyperoptic is an option, it’s a solid choice.

That said, if you’re fortunate enough to have both options, Community Fibre might edge out as the winner, primarily due to its more attractive pricing. Performance-wise, both providers are on par, offering reliable and speedy connections.
